MyNavi has reported that on the stage of CP+ in Yokohama, Japan, Sigma President Kazuto Yamaki announced that Sigma will be developing the second version of the Sigma 35mm F1.2 DG DN | Art lens. This is somewhat surprising because the original version is not that old, having been announced in 2019, and prime lenses usually last longer than six or so years in the market.

The lens is expected to be smaller and lighter than the current model. Sigma also claims that it will increase optical performance.

If we look at the size and weight of the original Sigma 35mm F1.2 DG DN | Art, we can certainly see where any reduction in size or weight would be welcomed. It’s not a small lens.
Weight | 1090 g (2.40 lb) |
---|---|
Diameter | 88 mm (3.46″) |
Length | 136 mm (5.35″) |
Filter thread | 82 mm |
The Sigma 35mm F1.2 DG DN | Art was a very well-reviewed lens, so it is certainly exciting to hear that version II will have improved image quality.
[I]ts Bokeh is probably as good as it gets on a 35mm lens. Add to that the light gathering power that is a half stop ahead of lenses with a focal ratio of f1.4 and an optical performance that is always a bit better and you have the best 35mm I’ve tested so far. Add in thorough weather sealing with fluorine coating on the front lens, a de-clickable aperture ring, the focus hold button, and a well padded lens case plus strap and you get a well-rounded package that should leave little open to wishes

While the Sigma 35mm F1.2 DG DN Art was a large prime, it was not excessively large compared to Nikon’s 35mm F1.2 lens, which is physically larger than the Art lens (90mm x 150mm). The Nikkor lens does weigh less than the Sigma lens, 1060g versus 1090g.
I should note that this isn’t the first time Sigma has refreshed its Art lenses fairly quickly. On May 16, 2024, they released version II of the Sigma 24-70mm F2.8 DG DN, which achieved a 10% reduction in weight. The original version of the Sigma 24-70 F2.8 DG DN was introduced in 2019.
There is no word on what mounts this lens will be available for. The easy answer is the Sony FE and the L-mount, but Sigma may also branch out to the Canon mount, especially if Canon has no plans to create a Canon RF 35mm F1.2L lens.
